In the gaming (video games) world there are things called “clans”. Clans are a lot like teams in baseball. or football. Players with different skills get together to play each bringing their own unique talent to the table. Some clans are different though. Some clans are more like a family.
Members argue, and scuffle, tell jokes, share their lives, and in time of need, seek the solace of their friends. They’re good for bouncing ideas off of, encouraging you when you need it, or just telling you when you’re out and out wrong.
Tonight I did one of the saddest things of my life. Due to a recent event in our famiy I decided I would like to spend much more time with my son and wife so, I resigned as a leader from one of the best clans around.
No we didn’t enter any big tourneys nor did we win any leagues. We weren’t known as the most skillful nor did we pretend to be. What we had was heart. We were a family.
I have never….NEVER….been so proud to have friends like these. The show of solidarity and devotion can not be matched by any team.
Sixty years ago my dad jumped from an airplane into Normandy. They fought every major battle from Normandy to Belgium, Einhoven, Bastogne, and all the way to Berchtesgaden. While he was alive my dad tearfully recounted stories of his “band of brothers”.
Well dad, I understand now. You see, I have my own band of brothers.
